Careful is a collection of writers, photographers, and videographers based out of Toronto, Ontario. Through thoughtful and inventive multimedia storytelling, we aim to push the state of music discourse forward. Join us as we celebrate the power of art and those who wield it.

Mahalia Burkmar – better known as the internet-favourite @mahalia – recently made her Canadian debut. After an unfortunate flooding incident at the Drake Hotel, the songstress found refuge at @thegarrisonto. Luckily for fans, The Garrison was able to accommodate more people, and shortly after additional tickets were released, the show sold out once again. You could feel the anticipation and excitement in the air while walking past the line of fans outside the venue. The opening act, @loonymoonchild hailing from Scarborough, set the tone with her alternative approach to R&B. When Mahalia took to the stage, her fans were drawn to her presence and powerful performance. Her impressive vocals were showcased on “Sober” bringing fans to the dancefloor, enthusiastically singing along. After her second song, she took a moment to tell her fans how excited she was to be here in Toronto, and went on to thank them for their continuous support. The loving welcome by relentless fans made this a night to remember; both for us and Mahalia. Although I wasn’t familiar with @chronixxmusic prior to his headlining set at @manifesto_to, I walked away that night with great admiration for the atmosphere he’s able to cultivate while on stage — air horns rocketing out into the night sky, families singing along while gathered around lawn chairs, sprawled across the grounds of city hall, flags from several nations and continents flying high, not a sour or stone face in sight. Nomenclature aside, Manifesto has long positioned itself as more than just an art festival; more aptly, a coming together of diverse, often neglected communities unified by the act of witnessing and discovering the experiences of others. Acts like Chronixx, whose radiant music explicitly invites that kind of communal response, are absolutely vital to the growth and preservation of this wonderful series of events. @charlottedaywilson’s cool and collected R&B ushered in some much-needed stability following the confluence of rain and wind leading up to (and nosing its way slightly into) her performance, inspiring rows of bright, wide-eyed smiles in spite of it. “You’re the best crowd ever for coming out in this,” she proclaimed. But the @manifesto_to family isn’t one to let an annual get-together dissolve into oblivion — after all, what good is solidarity if it’s undone by some unfortunate weather? And Charlotte Day Wilson’s music has come to occupy a very special place in the hearts of listeners for her uncompromising message of unity, empathy, and empowerment. In other words, there was no way her set would be anything less than a grand encapsulation of those values. If there’s anything @fromthemindofseanleon has learned in his career, it’s that you have to roll with the punches. Navigating the up’s and down’s of artistry is difficult, but real fortitude can be found in the ability to find opportunity in difficult times. During his headlining set at @199zfest – a performance in which he promoted a safe space for patrons of the arts – his mic was giving him trouble. Rather than storming off stage, the IXXI artist decided to deliver an intimate listening experience to the expansive @operahouseto. Previewing new material, Maui displayed his musical flexibility, from his merciless bars to a bouncy, @harrison.music -assisted track; the likes of which quickly turned a ravenous crowd into partygoers on a dancefloor. It was the cherry atop the cake crafted by @the199z. As Sean prefaced before his set, “It takes a lot of courage to come up here and chase your dreams”. The discord between @sayaslaya‘s influences and her brand of silky-smooth pop is fascinating. After hearing her perform songs like Side Ting, Welcome to Paradise, and Wet Dreams at @199zfest, each loaded with playful irreverence and idyllic imagery; then discovering her admiration for vintage horror cinema — in particular, Italian giallo films of the 70s and 80s, acclaimed for their subversive blend of vibrant colour, brutal violence, and eroticism — I find myself returning to her music to ask: is there an unspoken darkness that exists between the lines of her tales of pleasure and passion? In shining a spotlight on emerging artists, @199zfest also serves as a fascinating example of the potential for youth to hit their creative stride at an increasingly younger age. Though @langstonfrancis has yet to even turn 18, it can’t be denied that his sound is as fully fleshed-out and realized as his peers’. The multi-instrumentalist wielded an acoustic guitar as his weapon of choice for a series of warm ballads containing his reflections on connection and growth. The stripped-down renditions of his rich, electro-infused R&B made an already memorable night even more special.
